Spirituality and Practice in Meditation: A Guide to Spiritual Discipline

Spirituality and practice in meditation require self-discipline. In fact, the secret to achieving inner peace lies in making your personal spiritual journey a priority. If you want to improve your spirituality and practice in meditation, here are some practical tips you can start with.

Spirituality and Practice: Tips to Improve

1. Practice Daily

You can’t master meditation in one session. Instead, it takes tons of practice. The period before mastery can extend to months and years. However, the secret to improvement is to continuously develop the habit of meditating.

Set aside a few minutes of your day to meditate. Consider this period your sacred space. Let no one and nothing distract you. Block it off on your to-do list. Set an alarm on your phone if you have to. The idea is to identify meditation as an important part of your daily life. It should be significant enough that you set aside time for it.

2. Don’t Overanalyze

At times, meditation can leave beginners paralyzed. They tend to overanalyze and overthink the meditation process. Remember, overthinking is the opposite of relaxing. To counteract this, begin by sitting or lying down in a comfortable position. Then, close your eyes and take long and deep breaths. Recognize how your body adjusts and moves to your breath. In a nutshell, be an observer of your body.

Note: Meditation will take some getting used to at first. However, the key is to feel relaxed while doing it.

3. Be Okay with Being Alone

Most people are afraid of being alone. However, what they don’t realize is that being ‘alone’ doesn’t automatically make you lonely. Relish in the comfort of your own person. Recognize that you don’t always need to be with other people.

Use your alone time to reflect. Think about the choices made in the past. Or, plan your future goals and identify the action steps you can take towards attaining them.

Sometimes, all you really need is a break from all the external chatter and clutter. Take yourself out on a date. It doesn’t even have to be anywhere fancy. A neighborhood cafe will do. You can even choose to spend a few minutes in an empty room of your house. Just remember to minimize distractions. Refrain from using your phone and your laptop.

4. Serve Others

No man is an island. So help out someone in need. You don’t have to stick to helping out a family member or a friend. After all, strangers will be glad to receive a helping hand as well.

The best part is, the gesture doesn’t need to be grand. A random act of kindness can go a long way. Something as small as asking a stranger how their day is or lending someone a hand with their groceries still carries worth.

5. Release and Forgive

Understand that meditation isn’t simply about recognizing the factors around you and within you. It also involves letting go of the frustrations you hold. Make it a point to meditate before going to sleep at night.

Think of both the highlights and the low points of your day. Identify ways you could have made a situation better. Release all your frustrations before going to bed. Forgive those who have wronged you. Don’t forget to forgive yourself as well. After all, tomorrow is a new day to be better.
