The Science of Spirituality: Understanding the Flow in Psychological Perspective

Many people believe they understand the science of spirituality and what it means to be “in the flow.” However, learning from a psychologist or neuroscientist’s point of view can be helpful to your practice. In spite of the onslaught of technology, many people still find time for spirituality. Additionally, even with today’s hectic routines, people still use traditional practices to keep in touch with their spirituality. These practitioners use everything from simple reflection to deep meditation. However, why do so many prioritize spirituality? This Forbes article provides a psychological perspective.

Science of Spirituality as Explained by Psychology

The article continues that “many people talk of feeling…as if something greater has taken over and they’re simply letting it happen. A Psychology Today article explains that “going with the flow means accepting what is happening in the now and not trying to manipulate or change situations.”

To further illustrate, clinical psychologist Ben Michaelis has provided these observations as to what happens when one gets “in the flow:”

Psychological Benefits of Spirituality

Clinical and forensic psychologist Stephen Diamond described spirituality in another Psychology Today article. He said spirituality is “characterized by psychological growth, creativity, consciousness and emotional maturation.” These can only be achieved when one gets rid of all distractions of the outside world and taps into his personal self — his spiritual side.

Tapping into one’s spirituality has been said to have psychological, everyday benefits. Those who regularly do activities like yoga and meditation claim to have gained a clearer mind. Consequently, they can stay more focused throughout the day. For others, getting in touch with their spiritual side results in greater happiness and contentment. In turn, this provides them with a better outlook and performance in life.
