2. Manchester By the Sea

Manchester by the Sea is a drama about moving on and forgiveness. The lead character, Lee Chandler, has already had a tough life. However, upon the death of his brother, Joe, Lee is then forced to return to Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts. Here, he has to face people from his past who bring back painful memories. Additionally, as Joe has listed him as the only guardian for his son, Patrick, Lee is forced to stay longer than expected. When Lee then has a chance encounter with his ex-wife, she tells him how sorry she was for their divorce. Lee then becomes determined to heal and move on from his past.

3. Groundhog Day

Phil Connors, a weatherman, discovers that he is stuck in a time loop of February 2, forcing him to relive the day over and over again. While at first he uses this to his advantage, later on he becomes tired of it. However, even a suicide attempt cannot break the repeating cycle. Phil eventually learns that, in order to overcome the time loop, and finally wake up to February 3, he must learn to be selfless. This movie reminds us that no matter how much we want to succeed, when we are not doing things right, we won’t achieve happiness.

4. If Only

This movie teaches us about selflessness and not taking others for granted. Ian Wyndham, a career-driven professional, is in a relationship with Samantha. One night, Ian dreams that Sam will die at the end of the day. The dream feels so real he becomes depressed, waking up only to realize that Sam is there, right in front of him. Relieved, Ian begins to make extra efforts to change things and try and stop Sam’s death.

5. Lion

Lion is a biographical story of a young boy named Saroo who gets lost and separated from his family. After looking for a place to sleep, he wakes on a train in Calcutta. Here, he lives with street children until he is brought to an orphanage where an Australian couple adopts him. Twenty years later, he begins searching for his biological family, simultaneously seeking approval from his adopted mother, and looking for his true self.

6. Paterson

The movie is about the life of Paterson, who finds life’s beauty in its simple details. Paterson is a driver in Paterson, New Jersey who listens to passengers’ musings and loves to observe other people. Every day, before he takes his route, he spends time writing in his secret notebook, writing poetry. When Paterson’s wife finally convinces him to publish his work, they discover the dog has shredded his notebook.

7. Waking Life

Waking Life is an animated movie offering discussions about life, rational dreams, and different types of meditation. It is a movie for the curious and for those seeking the true meaning of life, telling the story of a man who observes others and believes he is in a dream and suffering from an existential crisis. Through his dreams, he finds himself conversing with other philosophers who have insightful discussions about their purpose.
